Historical version 2 of Butterfly Block Stitch (view current version)

A knitting stitch with pretty butterfly-like motifs formed by raised threads.

Abbreviations:

  • SL5wytb: Slip 5 stitches purlwise with yarn to back of work.
  • PU3strK1 (pick up 3 strands, knit 1): Put tip of right-hand needle under the three long strands formed by the slipped stitches in previous rows, and knit them together with the next stitch.

Cast on a multiple of 10 stitches, plus 7.

  • Row 1 (right side): K to end.
  • Row 2: P6, *(SL5wytb, P5), repeat from * to last st, P1.
  • Row 3: K to end.
  • Row 4: As row 2.
  • Row 5: K to end.
  • Row 6: As row 2.
  • Row 7: K6, *(K2, PU3strK1, K7), repeat from * to last stitch, K1
  • Row 8: P1, *(SL5wytb, P5), repeat from * to last 6 st, SL5wytb, P1.
  • Row 9: K to end.
  • Row 10: As row 8.
  • Row 11: K to end.
  • Row 12: As row 8.
  • Row 13: K1, *(K2, PU3strK1, K7), repeat from * to last 6 st, K2, PU3strK1, K3.

Repeat rows 2-13 until as long as required.
