The basic idea of reversible cables is that instead of stockinette for the bit that gets twisted, you use rib, and instead of reverse stockinette for the background, you use moss stitch.

Lily Chin uses this technique a lot, and seems to like taking credit for it, but it's been around at least since the sixties.
