If working a long row in a pattern that repeats, you can help stop yourself getting lost by putting little markers between the stitch at the end of one repeat, and the stitch at the beginning of another.

You can make your own stitch markers out of loops of yarn tied in a knot. The best yarn to use is one that contrasts with the main work and that doesn't snag or leave lint.

100% viscose "crochet cotton" and dental floss are some unusual threads that work well for this - see photo to right for the viscose stuff being used in a lacy shawl (Kake's Birch shawl).
