Special abbreviations:

Cast on 20 st.
- Row 1: RSB, P2, K6, P2, RSB.
- Row 2: WSB, K2, P6, K2, WSB.
- Row 3: RSB, P2, slip next 2 st onto cable needle leaving it at front of work, K2, K2 from cable needle, K2, P2, RSB.
- Row 4: As row 2.
- Row 5: As row 1.
- Row 6: As row 2.

Second swatch - either body or edging
Lambswool knitted double on 4mm needles. Cast on 41 stitches and work in shadow rib as follows:
- Row 1: K2, (P1, K2) to end.
- Row 2: P to end.
Odd-numbered rows are the right side.

Third swatch - body
Lambswool knitted double on 7mm needles. Cast on 41 stitches and work in linen stitch as follows:
- Row 1: K1, (slip 1 purlwise with yarn in front, K1) to end.
- Row 2: K1, P1, (slip 1 purlwise with yarn in back, P1) to last stitch, K1.
Odd-numbered rows are the right side.

Fourth swatch - body
Lambswool knitted quadruple on 5.5mm needles. Cast on 26 stitches and work in stocking stitch with a garter stitch border.
Fifth swatch - edging
Special abbreviations:
- RSB (right side border): K1, sl 1 wyif, K1, sl 1 wyif, K1
- WSB (wrong side border): sl 1 wyif, K1, sl 1 wyif, K1, sl 1 wyif
- STw2: pass needles behind 1st st and K 2nd st in back of loop. Sl passed st purlwise onto right-hand needle and sl knitted stitch onto right-hand needle.

- Row 1: WSB, K2, P5, K2, WSB.
